Don’t Dress For Dinner by Marc Camoletti and Robin Hawdon

Performed by the Dilys Guite Players at the Lantern Theatre, Sheffield.
Director: Phil Eardley / Assistant Director: Alison Glentworth

This boulevard comedy was a smash hit in Paris, where it played for over two years, and in London, where it ran for six years at the Apollo and Duchess Theatres. It has since played in theatres all over the USA and the English speaking world and was revived in Chicago and on Broadway at the American Airlines Theatre in 2012. This production was nominated for two Tony awards.

Bernard is planning a romantic weekend with his chic Parisian mistress in his charming converted French farmhouse, whilst his wife, Jacqueline, is away. He has arranged for a cordon bleu cook to prepare gourmet delights, and has invited his best friend, Robert, along too to provide the alibi. It’s foolproof; what could possibly go wrong? Well… suppose Robert turns up not realising quite why he has been invited. Suppose Robert and Jacqueline are secret lovers, and consequently determined that Jacqueline will NOT leave for the weekend. Suppose the cook has to pretend to be the mistress and the mistress is unable to cook. Suppose everyone’s alibi gets confused with everyone else’s. An evening of hilarious confusion ensues as Bernard and Robert improvise at breakneck speed.

Casting

Male: 3 roles (all adult, ages determined when casting)
Female: 3 roles (all adult, ages determined when casting)

Bernard: smart, funny man who is perhaps a little fussy. Not very good at being sly, but has a sharp mind and a quick wit.

Jacqueline: able to think on her feet and manipulate on the fly. She’s cunning and a bit suspicious, but always charming and rarely loses her cool.

Robert: kind, not very good at lying and perhaps gets a bit flustered. He is having an affair with Jacqueline, but not cut out for the sneaking around and deception required.

Suzanne: Bernard’s mistress. Charming but not used to the dodging and scheming that this night requires. She is used to the luxuries of a certain lifestyle and is comically incapable of basic household responsibilities.

Suzette: the cook. Quick, sassy and always ready to make a bit of money. She isn’t afraid to dive into whatever the job requires and isn’t ashamed to make sure she is paid for each additional task.

George: Suzette’s husband. Strong and intimidating. He has a low tolerance for these games and perhaps lacks the intelligence to keep up. He loves Suzette but has a bit of jealous streak and an easily flaring temper.

No preparation is necessary, auditions are workshop style and will be held at the Lantern Theatre, Kenwood Park Road, Sheffield, S7 1NF.
