“We’ve never come across a theatre that's quite so terrifically charming. What’s on stage is only part of the attraction; a visit to the intimate Lantern is often as much for the atmosphere of the place as it is for the performances within it (though you're unlikely to be let down on either count)”

Who We Are

Sheffield’s Oldest Surviving Theatre

We are Sheffield's oldest surviving theatre and an independent charity that is one of the most unique places for communities to experience and take part in arts and education.

What began as a private folly, built in 1893, for a local wealthy steel merchant, we are now a vital part of Sheffield’s heritage and community that has become one of the most accomplished community theatre groups in Sheffield, who have created a special space open for everyone.

Since re-opening its doors in 1957, The Lantern theatre has captivated the hearts of audiences throughout the region with a variety of quality performances and shows. Book your tickets now and look forward to a unique theatrical experience.

Our Mission

Our mission is to create, develop and nurture skills and creative talent through opportunities and the performance of quality, accessible productions; educate people, especially younger members in dramatic appreciation and understanding; and remain a vital component of the cultural life of the community.

Our programme connects communities with creative arts, helping to create a sense of belonging for all ages.

Our inclusive programme has become very important to many people, which enhances the wellbeing of all participants, and has become a space for everyone that is welcoming, inclusive and open to all sections of the community - not just as an audience member - but also offering opportunities for anyone no matter their age or experience to become an active participant and involved with every aspect of theatre and the arts.
